Active Lives
You work hard to stay active. BSR helps your body keep up.
Whether you're a runner, a swimmer, a weekend cyclist, a yoga devotee, a dog walker who never misses a morning, or a man who's been quietly soldiering on through pain that's been building for years — this page is for you.
Staying active is one of the best things you can do for your body. But activity also accumulates stress — in the muscles, the joints, the connective tissue, and the nervous system. And when that stress isn't released, it becomes the thing that holds you back.

Sport & Performance
The old saying "no pain, no gain" has long been discredited.
Pain is your body's warning signal — not a target to push through. When body stress is present, the deep muscles enter a protective state, altering movement patterns and increasing the risk of injury. You might feel looser after a session, but tightness elsewhere — the hamstrings, the knees, the hips — is a sign the body is compensating.
Regular BSR sessions help by:
- Releasing stored tension before it becomes injury
- Supporting faster, more complete recovery between training sessions
- Restoring natural movement patterns disrupted by body stress
- Reducing the risk of overuse injuries
- Keeping the nervous system calm and communicating clearly with the muscles
BSR has supported everyone from runners and swimmers to golfers, cyclists and yoga practitioners. The common thread? A body that moves better, recovers faster, and stays in the game longer.

Active Lives — For Women Too
You don't have to be an athlete for this page to be relevant.
Staying active means something different to everyone. For some it's training for a race. For others it's keeping up with grandchildren, tending a garden, walking every day, or simply being able to move through life without pain getting in the way.
Whatever active looks like for you — BSR helps your body recover more fully, move more freely, and keep doing the things that matter to you for longer.
Active women commonly come to me with:
• Recurring muscle tension that never quite resolves between workouts
• Old injuries that flare up with activity
• Knee, hip or ankle pain that's affecting movement
• Tight hamstrings or hip flexors that resist stretching
• Fatigue that doesn't improve with rest
• The frustrating feeling of working hard but being held back by a body that won't cooperate
BSR works by releasing the stored tension that sits beneath the surface — the kind that stretching, massage, and even physio can't always reach — giving your body a cleaner foundation to move from.
Men's Health
Most men come to me because someone who loves them suggested it.
A partner. A friend. A colleague who noticed they were in pain and had stopped complaining about it — which is often the most telling sign of all.
Men tend to carry pain quietly. They adapt. They manage. They get on with it. And by the time they find their way to BSR, they've often been carrying something for a very long time.
The good news is that it's never too late. The body's ability to release stored tension and restore itself doesn't have an expiry date.
BSR can help men with:
- Back, neck and shoulder pain — the most common reasons men come to see me
- Sciatic pain and leg symptoms
- Stress and the physical weight of carrying too much for too long
- Bladder issues or pelvic discomfort linked to stored tension in the lower back
- Prostate-related discomfort that may be influenced by body stress in the pelvic area
- Post-operative recovery and the effects of long-term physical wear and tear
- The general sense of being, as one client memorably put it, "basically clapped out"
BSR is not just for women. It's not complicated, it's not uncomfortable, and it doesn't require you to talk about how you're feeling if that's not your thing. You just lie down, and your body does the work.

Recovering from injury or surgery?
Surgical scars and old injury sites don't just heal on the surface — the tissue beneath can remain tight, restricted, and quietly limiting your movement long after the wound itself has closed.
This is particularly common after sports injuries, joint surgery, or any procedure requiring an incision. If you've ever felt like you "never quite got back to normal" after an injury, scar tissue may be part of the reason why.
Alongside BSR, I offer McLoughlin Scar Tissue Release — a gentle technique designed to soften these restrictions and support fuller, freer movement. It's often a missing piece for active people working to fully recover from injury or surgery.
The maintenance approach
One of the most valuable things I hear from long-term clients — both men and women — is that they wish they'd come sooner. Not just when something was wrong, but regularly, as a way of keeping the body balanced and functioning well.
Think of it the way you'd think of servicing a car. You don't wait for a breakdown. You maintain it — so it keeps running well, for longer.
Whether you come to me with something specific or simply want to stay on top of how your body feels, BSR fits around your life and your goals.

Your path to discovery
From your first session to the gradual unwinding of tension you've carried for years - I'll be with you all the way.
Your First
Session
We start by listening. A detailed conversation about your history, followed by your body's own guided assessment — revealing exactly where tension has been stored and where to begin.
Your Unique
Path
No two people are the same. BSR follows what your body reveals, session by session, at its own pace — gently releasing layer by layer, and moving you closer to feeling well.
Your
Recovery
Not a fixed endpoint, but a gradual return — to ease, to comfort, to movement, to feeling like yourself again. Your body knows how to heal. BSR simply gives it the space to do so.
Frequently asked questions
What should I expect during my first session?
Your first session begins with a conversation. I'll take a detailed case history so I can understand what's been going on for you — how long you've been experiencing it, what you've already tried, and what you're hoping for.
You remain fully clothed throughout, and I use a specially designed BSR couch that lowers gently, so there's no awkward climbing on and off.
I then test your body for stored tension using a series of gentle reflex tests along your spine and other relevant areas. Your body guides me to the exact sites of stress. I apply a gentle but precise stimulus to begin the release — and most people find the whole experience deeply relaxing.
Your first session lasts approximately 60 minutes. Subsequent sessions 45-60 min
How many sessions will I need?
This is one of the most common questions I'm asked — and the honest answer is that it depends on you, your body, and how long it has been carrying stored tension.
Some people notice significant changes after just one or two sessions. Others, particularly those with long-standing or complex issues, find that their body releases gradually over a series of appointments. As a general guide, I recommend an initial course of three sessions fairly close together, which gives your body the best chance to build momentum.
What I can tell you is that BSR is cumulative — each session builds on the last. And many clients choose to continue with occasional maintenance sessions once they're feeling well, simply to keep their body balanced.
I'll always be honest with you about your progress, and I'll never recommend sessions you don't need.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Whatever you're comfortable in. You remain fully clothed throughout your BSR session, so there's no need to bring a change of clothes or anything special. Loose, comfortable clothing is ideal — but honestly, most people come straight from work or their daily routine and that's completely fine.
Is BSR safe during pregnancy?
Yes — BSR is gentle, non-invasive and completely safe throughout pregnancy. In fact, pregnancy is one of the times I'd most encourage you to come.
As your body changes and your baby grows, the lower back and pelvis carry increasing load — and any tension already stored in those areas can become more pronounced. Regular BSR sessions can help keep the lower back and pelvic area as free from stress as possible, supporting your comfort and helping your body prepare naturally for birth.
Many pregnant women tell me their BSR session is the one hour in their week where they feel truly looked after. If you have any concerns or questions specific to your pregnancy, please don't hesitate to get in touch before booking.
How is BSR different from physiotherapy or chiropractic treatment?
It's a question I love being asked — because the differences are significant.
Physiotherapy typically focuses on rehabilitation through exercise, movement and manual therapy. Chiropractic focuses primarily on spinal manipulation — the adjustments and clicks you may be familiar with. Both have their place, and many of my clients have benefited from them.
BSR is different in a fundamental way. Rather than working on the body from the outside in, BSR works with the body's own intelligence — asking it where the stress is held and encouraging it to release that tension itself. There is no manipulation, no force, and no cracking or clicking of any kind.
BSR also looks for the source of the problem rather than treating the site of the pain. Tension held in one area of the body can affect another area entirely — and it's often only when those deeper patterns are released that lasting change begins to happen.
Many clients come to me having already tried physiotherapy or chiropractic — sometimes for years. BSR isn't a replacement for those approaches, but for many people it becomes the missing piece.
