Gut & Inner Health

Could your gut be carrying stress your mind has moved on from?

Most of us know the feeling. The stomach that knots before a difficult conversation. The appetite that vanishes during a stressful period. The digestive system that seems to have a mind — and a mood — entirely its own.
That's not a coincidence. And it's not a weakness. It's your body doing exactly what it's designed to do.
The question is — what happens when that stress never fully releases?

Your gut and your nervous system are in constant conversation.

The digestive system is one of the most richly innervated systems in the body — meaning it is deeply connected to, and dependent on, the nervous system to function well.

When body stress builds up in the lower back, the mid-back, or around the diaphragm, it can disrupt the nerve supply to the digestive organs — interfering with the signals that keep everything moving as it should. Add the impact of emotional and mental stress locked into the body over time, and the result can be a gut that is chronically unsettled, reactive, and uncomfortable.

This is why digestive complaints so often arrive alongside other symptoms — back pain, disrupted sleep, anxiety, fatigue. They share the same root.

Sound Familier?

  • Heartburn or acid reflux
  • Indigestion or nausea
  • Bloating and discomfort after eating
  • Cramping or lower abdominal pain
  • Constipation or diarrhoea — or both, alternating
  • Loss of appetite
  • A general sense that your digestion just isn't right

Perhaps you've been given a diagnosis of IBS and told to manage it. Perhaps you've adjusted your diet, tried supplements, been through investigations — and still don't feel quite right.

BSR won't replace the medical care you may need. But for many people, releasing stored tension from the spine and nervous system brings a noticeable improvement in digestive comfort — sometimes when nothing else has.

What BSR can do

By gently releasing body stress held in the areas that affect the digestive nerve supply — particularly the lower back, mid-spine and diaphragm — BSR helps restore clear communication between the nervous system and the gut.

As that communication improves, the body's own regulatory systems can begin to function more effectively. Many clients notice improvements in digestion as part of a broader shift — sleeping better, feeling less tense, experiencing less pain overall.

The gut, it turns out, is often one of the first places to show that the body is finally beginning to let go.

A Gentle Reminder

This page may surprise you — most people don't think of BSR when they think of digestive health. But the body doesn't work in isolated compartments. A problem presenting in one area often has its roots somewhere else entirely.

If you've been managing gut issues for a while and haven't found lasting relief, it may be worth exploring whether stored tension in the nervous system is part of the picture.

Your path to discovery

From your very first session to the gradual unwinding of tension you've carried for years  - I'll be with you every step of the way.

Your First

Session

We start by listening. A detailed conversation about your history, followed by your body's own guided assessment — revealing exactly where tension has been stored and where to begin.

Your Unique

Path

No two people are the same. BSR follows what your body reveals, session by session, at its own pace — gently releasing layer by layer, and moving you closer to feeling well.

Your

Recovery

Not a fixed endpoint, but a gradual return — to ease, to comfort, to movement, to feeling like yourself again. Your body knows how to heal. BSR simply gives it the space to do so.

Frequently asked questions

  • What should I expect during my first session?

Your first session begins with a conversation. I'll take a detailed case history so I can understand what's been going on for you — how long you've been experiencing it, what you've already tried, and what you're hoping for.

You remain fully clothed throughout, and I use a specially designed BSR couch that lowers gently, so there's no awkward climbing on and off.

I then test your body for stored tension using a series of gentle reflex tests along your spine and other relevant areas. Your body guides me to the exact sites of stress. I apply a gentle but precise stimulus to begin the release — and most people find the whole experience deeply relaxing.

Your first session lasts approximately 60 minutes. Subsequent sessions 45-60 min

  • How many sessions will I need?

This is one of the most common questions I'm asked — and the honest answer is that it depends on you, your body, and how long it has been carrying stored tension.

Some people notice significant changes after just one or two sessions. Others, particularly those with long-standing or complex issues, find that their body releases gradually over a series of appointments. As a general guide, I recommend an initial course of three sessions fairly close together, which gives your body the best chance to build momentum.

What I can tell you is that BSR is cumulative — each session builds on the last. And many clients choose to continue with occasional maintenance sessions once they're feeling well, simply to keep their body balanced.

I'll always be honest with you about your progress, and I'll never recommend sessions you don't need.

  • What should I wear to my appointment?

Whatever you're comfortable in. You remain fully clothed throughout your BSR session, so there's no need to bring a change of clothes or anything special. Loose, comfortable clothing is ideal — but honestly, most people come straight from work or their daily routine and that's completely fine.

  • Is BSR safe during pregnancy?

Yes — BSR is gentle, non-invasive and completely safe throughout pregnancy. In fact, pregnancy is one of the times I'd most encourage you to come

    .

As your body changes and your baby grows, the lower back and pelvis carry increasing load — and any tension already stored in those areas can become more pronounced. Regular BSR sessions can help keep the lower back and pelvic area as free from stress as possible, supporting your comfort and helping your body prepare naturally for birth.

Many pregnant women tell me their BSR session is the one hour in their week where they feel truly looked after.

If you have any concerns or questions specific to your pregnancy, please don't hesitate to get in touch before booking.

  • How is BSR different from physiotherapy or chiropractic treatment?

It's a question I love being asked — because the differences are significant.

Physiotherapy typically focuses on rehabilitation through exercise, movement and manual therapy. Chiropractic focuses primarily on spinal manipulation — the adjustments and clicks you may be familiar with. Both have their place, and many of my clients have benefited from them.

BSR is different in a fundamental way. Rather than working on the body from the outside in, BSR works with the body's own intelligence — asking it where the stress is held and encouraging it to release that tension itself. There is no manipulation, no force, and no cracking or clicking of any kind.

BSR also looks for the source of the problem rather than treating the site of the pain. Tension held in one area of the body can affect another area entirely — and it's often only when those deeper patterns are released that lasting change begins to happen.

Many clients come to me having already tried physiotherapy or chiropractic — sometimes for years. BSR isn't a replacement for those approaches, but for many people it becomes the missing piece.
